Nested replies are now available in Yammer conversations

Conversations are essential to healthy communities. Discovering and participating in conversations happening across your organization keeps employees connected and engaged.

Today, we are thrilled to announce the general availability of nested replies and related features that will make Yammer conversations fundamentally better. By grouping replies together in a way that preserves context around these discussions, this makes it easier for you to follow and engage deeper in conversation.

Nested replies and threaded conversations help users organize, follow, and contribute more effectively, and it’s been a top customer request ever since the new Yammer landed last year. We wanted to approach this problem thoughtfully, not just because it involved several complex engineering problems, but because we wanted to make sure, we were improving the entire conversational experience holistically.

But we didn’t stop there. Now it is easier for you to navigate to content that triggered a notification without having to unroll multiple threads. By giving you different ways to organize your feed, it’s easier to consume feeds in your communities and stay on top of the conversations you care about. To this end, we are also improving the way a message can be deleted, so that there is no loss of context around deleted content.

Below is a deeper look at the changes that are now available in Yammer web and mobile.

Nested replies: Yammer will now have one level deep nesting available in conversations, so that users can reply directly to a reply within a conversation. This helps organize the conversations and improves readability.

Deep-linking: If you get notified about a conversation, deep-linking brings you directly to the message so you can quickly react and respond.

Delete message: Yammer allows you to delete content while preserving the context around the discussion. Now, the deleted comment will be replaced by a tombstone message showing that a message has been deleted.

Feed sorting: This update allows you to sort the community feed to show the recent posts first, so you can scan new messages quickly to stay up to date. Please note this change will only be available on the web for now.

This makes my weekend!

Very excited to hear these improvements rolling out. These surely will help engaging and collaboration more intuitive .. keep em coming …

Great enhancement to threads. Helps to keep track of the conversation and point people directly to the information they need quickly!

What is the ETA on  "available to all users globally soon."

Hey @Claus Juhl Christensen! We expect to complete the rollout to all users globally by the end of December 2021! Hope this helps.

@trisharti  thanks for the transparency, but the answer is very disappointing considering the headline "now available". By end of the year is not "now" or even "soon".

Great news!  We can't wait till the nested replies function is available in our company!
PS! Please do not write "Available now" when you are still rolling out the feature.

A couple of questions, @trisharti

  1. When will the option to sort on community feed be available in the SharePoint Yammer web part? We have integrated Yammer on many SharePoint sites, and I would say the ability to sort is even more important in the SharePoint web part.
  2. When will it be possible to set the default sorting for a community? If not - do you plan to add that feature as well?

Other features/functionalities we are waiting for:
  3. Able to change/add/delete photos on existing posts
  4. See who I am following and who is following me

@Kevin Crossman We should be rolling out to most networks in the next couple of weeks ( and we are excited to hear that your organization has received it already. We cant wait to hear any feedback you have for us!). The tentative end of quarter timeline is to account for the abundance of caution we are handling this rollout with,  given how fundamental a change this is to Yammer Conversations.

The new feature is working great for newly created replies to comments. I'm really happy with the tremendous new features added to Yammer over the past year.

@Astrid Your organization should be able to experience this feature now!

Hi @trisharti

I noticed in a thread that one of the comments was deleted and that the reply underneath is no longer loading because it’s nested in the deleted comment. When I click on “show 1 reply” under the deleted comment, nothing loads.

The user deleted his own post, and now the important response is hidden as a result!

This is happening on the Web and App.

Is this supposed to happen or is there an issue?

Hi @andrewclarke , I've had this problem and I solved this using the old Yammer. The messages turned back to be visible.

Hi @FabioAlcides, and thank you for your response. When you turned on Old Yammer, the messages became visible. However, when your turned on New Yammer, again, did they disappear again? We use the New Yammer platform so what you're suggesting may be a temporary fix?
