Essential announcements in Yammer are now generally available

Keeping your employees informed and engaged is critical in today’s rapidly changing workscape. Over the past 18 months, we’ve continued to build capabilities in Yammer to help corporate communicators and leaders share their message at scale.

Essential announcements

Some announcements are crucial to keeping employees up to date - whether it’s regarding safety, protocols, policies, or other priority news. In these instances, corporate communicators and leaders need ways to guarantee that messages are delivered to every employee. This feature allows Yammer community admins to set an announcement as ‘essential’ to ensure that it’s delivered via email to every member of that community, even if it is outside of their preferred notification settings.

How it works

Community admins and network admins can now choose to set a post as an ‘essential announcement’ by changing the announcement delivery options before they post, which will notify all community members by email including those members who are not setup to receive email notifications of updates in Yammer. The total number of members will also be listed at the bottom of the editing card. Admins must be using the new Yammer experience to use this feature, but members using both the classic and new Yammer will receive the notifications. Learn more about how to send announcements in Yammer here. When members receive email notifications for essential announcements, they will be able to reply directly to the announcer by email. The email would also contain a note explaining to the member that they received this email as the community admin chose to make an essential announcement.


Reaching users across Microsoft 365

By sending an announcement in Yammer, it will appear as an interactive conversation in Outlook. This helps accelerate the time to consumption and drive engagement, so members can see, react, and comment on the post right from their Outlook inbox. This works for desktop, web, and mobile experiences.

And for those that have the Yammer Communities app for Teams installed, announcements and @mentions made in Yammer will also appear in your Microsoft Teams activity feed.

Hey @Ravin Sachdeva, will responses to the "essential announcement" also send an email to everyone? Like in the example shown "April Townhall" if someone comments on that post a year later will everyone who received the first post get hit again showing the person comment? That would make this feature a little to noisy, in my opinion. 


Hey @Afloyd416, I don't think that'll happen unless the individual interacts with the thread. Essential announcements ensure your message hits their Outlook inbox regardless of their preferences to receive email notifications.


Comments to the announcement within the interactive email will NOT generate an email notification for all members. This is a big advantage of announcements made in Yammer vs. those sent via DL, it does not generate reply-all emails. 


Only if a user comments on the announcement, or was mentioned in it, will they receive email notifications for comments. That too only when the user has turned on email notifications from Yammer.

Thanks @Ravin Sachdeva.  This will be very helpful if it works as outlined above.


I just tested and it indeed said when composing  the # of people will get Email (and Yammer ) notifications regardless of their Yammer notification settings. But I have not received any Email notification even after waited a while, so have some questions:


  • How long does it take to get the notifications for essential announcements to show up in users' Outlook/Outlook Web? Does it follow any rules or algorithms?


  • And why don't I yet see the 'Yammer Emails' folder in Outlook Web after over a year.  This is  probably why I don't see the Yammer notifications. We talked about this in the below blog post.

@Monir thank you for your feedback. Couple of quick questions to help us understand the issue:

1. Did you create the essential announcement? if so, you would not receive an email yourself but all other community members. If someone else created the announcement, you should be receiving it within a few minutes. If that is not happening as expected, would you mind sending me your tenant details over direct/private message here? Thanks!
These emails would respect user created mailbox rules such as routing all emails from "" into a folder, as well as any exchange level rules that your org may have. 


2. The 'Yammer Emails' folder that you see in any mocks is purely for representation purposes. Yammer does not create any folders in your mailbox automatically. The blog is about new interactive emails, which allows you to interact with posts and reply directly from within the email. You would need to turn on your email notifications from Yammer to be able to get notified via email and receive these emails in your inbox.

Yes, I created an Essential Announcement to quickly test this in a test environment where I'm the only licensed user for now. I sort of thought the creator wont probably get the email notification but when was creating the announcement it says it will send the email notification to 1 person: pls see the image below, so ...

Hi. We tried publishing an "essential announcement" but we didn't get any email notification. What's happening is that the announcements are just visible in the Yammer inbox and not on Outlook. (even if we checked the "notify in email" function). Is there something we need to change in the settings?

@Cesette1230 thanks for your feedback. Have you raised a support ticket with Microsoft yet? If not, I would highly encourage that you do so for quick resolution of your issue.

Hi @Ravin Sachdeva I am having the same issue on yammer these days. I am the admin for our organisation and we have not changed anything so far, but almost for a couple of weeks, we cannot send any email notifications for our announcement to our current users who have been successfully receiving the email notification so far. And also when we were able to send these notifications successfully, everyone had been receiving the notification except me, who made the announcement. So, of course, this was another problem. but now, the announcement email notification is not working for anyone at all.

Hi @Ravin Sachdeva , can you remove the announcement feature from a post after it's been posted? Or unflag it somehow, so it no longer is posted above other announcements?
