Email notifications, How does that really work.

I have tried to find out how this work, when and why do Teams-users get email notifications? Explained to me as I am 5 years old :) 


How I think its working: 


If I choose every hour in mye personal settings:

I receive an email if Activity "flag" is unread for more than hour.

I have been reading this article Manage notifications in Teams and this one Reply to missed activity emails from Outlook But still confused.


When, and why do users receiev email notifications.


What is the definition of "been away from Teams". Is it ehen I have Teams running, and not paid attention. Or is it I have closed the Teams app,, had my computer turned off?
