At Microsoft Ignite 2019 in Orlando, Andrew Bybee, Principal GPM, Microsoft Teams Calling & Meeting Ecosystem at Microsoft gave us an overview of the latest developments for Compliance Recording integrations to Microsoft Teams. We also got a live demo of a recorded Microsoft Teams session.

Working with a number of customers that have recording and compliance requirements I was excited about this session. This blog provides a quick summary. You can check out the full session recording here.

What and When?

There will be a recording API and a partner ‘Certified for Microsoft Teams’ program for compliance recording solutions from partners. Limited preview in Q4 CY19, Broader customer availability early CY2020.

The following are the first partners:

Why do some organisations need compliance recording needed?

  • Compliance and regulatory obligations
  • Security and surveillance
  • Workforce engagement (WFE)

While it is usually a subset of users that need to be recorded it is a critical feature for many organisations. Microsoft refers to this as "organisational recording".

  • Allow recording of PSTN/VoIP audio, video and sharing sessions
  • Recording of calls and meetings via integrated partner solutions
  • Cloud-based recording with compliant regional storage to address regulated organizations
  • Managed per-user via integrated Teams admin policies and tools
  • Enabled for Office 365 Phone System users (via E5 or E3 Add-on)
  • There will be a visual user interface notification for Teams clients and an audio notification for IP Phone and PSTN callers when users are being recorded.
  • It is not silent recording, the users are aware of the recording happening
  • To the users, it’s a normal call or meeting experience
  • Partners will bring their own additional features around search, discovery and analysis
