Mac Word 365 highlighter does not allow continuity

Previous versions allowed you to press highlighter first, and then do as much highlighting as you need without going back to the template at the start of each highlighting sequence. The new Mac Word 365 does not appear to provide this function. I would be interested to know if there are perhaps specific settings that will allow this to happen.
