Migrating your on prem workloads to the Cloud can often feel like embarking on a journey without a map.
I’ve spent a considerable amount of time talking to organisations about migrations and how they embark on it and in this blog/video I share five tips that every organisation needs to think about when they embark on that migration journey.
Assess your environment. To move forward you need to understand what you’ve got currently. Find out what the server in the corner is, speak to the business and find out who own’s it, is it still relevant or should it have been switched off 2 years ago?
Make sure you are interacting with everyone within your IT department and the rest of the business on this journey. Changing how/where you host key services could cause nervousness within your organisation so make sure you are communicating openly and honestly about what is happening.
Understand how your organisation, how your leadership are going to measure success. Is saving money the reason you are embarking on this migration journey? Or is it getting all your workloads out your datacentre by a certain date? Whatever the reason make sure you understand it and agree with leadership what success looks like so you can plan, stay focussed and deliver.
A datacentre migration to the Cloud is a large and important project, things will go wrong. It’s the nature of the beast, the key thing is to do is not panic and learn from whatever happens. Use it as a learning curve and help feed your experiences into the next phases.
