For everyone that is looking forward to spending time back in the office, there's another one who has flourished working remotely. The way we work is changing – and for IT admins, we want to change the work to be done.

I sat down with my colleagues from the Microsoft Managed Desktop team, Josh Pointer, General Manager of Engineering, and Beverley Ashton, Director-lead of the Customer Acceleration Team to get their takes on the state of work today, and the way our service fits into this new landscape.

Lior Bela: I'm curious how you think about the service from our customers' viewpoint.

Josh Pointer: What I hear a lot is that the workplace experience today is the endpoint. I've had people on my team for over a year that I've never met in person. It's tough. But one thing that we think really helps is working hard to deliver a good experience. Giving end users the tools they need to do a good job – and providing the user with service that makes doing that job seamless – that's culture, that's experience, and that's what we're doing with Microsoft Managed Desktop.

Beverley: The best thing I heard was a customer who said they call it "Microsoft Magic Desktop."

And that's from an IT service pro. Of course that's a great soundbite, but we wanted to get to the "why" – I have an idea, we are proud of the way the service works – but hearing that the pain of enterprise endpoint management – maintaining a "golden' image, gearing up for patch Tuesdays, pulling all-nighters during "zero day" events – was eased, relieved, erased – that means a lot.

Josh: The software isn't getting smaller – it evolves to offer new features and meet new needs, like hybrid work. The customer estate isn't getting smaller – or simpler –mergers and acquisitions mean combining systems, combining philosophies. Some enterprises have had to have a "make do" approach with limited resources – all of these point to increasing complexity. And it's not a race with a start and an end. It's the way of the world.

So there's a "clean start" kind of feeling with Managed Desktop. The idea was consolidating identity and management and security and taking that off the customer's plate would have long-term value. And then letting us manage that complexity – letting Microsoft manage Microsoft products – it has a lot of appeal.

Beverley: That clean start approach showed up for a customer where we had existing hardware that we flashed from their own 'Golden image' to Microsoft Managed Desktop and users said they could feel the difference – same computer, but a better experience.

Lior: I'm calling that the "inspiring experience."

Josh: a lot of it is just un-breaking the experience – but yeah, that's my point – if you have the ability to give someone a lighter machine - if you can make it boot faster instead of telling them to turn it on and go get a coffee – that's the experience I have on my cell phone, on my tablet…that's the experience we want to deliver, that customers want for their people

Beverley: When younger employees are interviewing for positions, that's the experience they expect. Customers don't want to lose talent because of their tech. But it's hard to do well while also working on the business challenges, and security, and all the routine maintenance of large estates.

Lior: We'll have to come back to some of these topics I feel there's a lot here, but let's keep it a blog and not a book – thank you both for your time.

For more information about the Microsoft Managed Desktop service reach out to your Microsoft rep or visit - and know that we'll have more to share with you soon.

Return to the Microsoft Managed Desktop blog home page
Wed, 30 Mar 2022 14:43:24 GMT Lior_Bela 2022-03-30T14:43:24Z What does it mean to empower IT?

<LI-VIDEO vid="" align="center" size="medium" width="400" height="225" uploading="false" thumbnail="" external="url"></LI-VIDEO>

We’re excited to share a new animated video depicting common endpoint management tasks as they would unfold in a Microsoft Managed Desktop environment.

You’ve probably been waiting for this if you’ve seen our explainer videos sharing how we deliver on our service promises of fantastic device experiences and expert security monitoring.

This 4-minute “day in the life” narrative, gives you a glimpse of how Microsoft Managed Desktop empowers IT pros to add value to core business objectives.

Whether you’re a seasoned endpoint manager or a curious business professional, we think you’ll enjoy getting to know Remy, an IT pro responsible for provisioning, maintaining, protecting, and supporting more than 5,000 user devices in an enterprise environment.

How will Remy address the urgent requirements of stakeholders throughout the organization? Stocked refrigerators and gourmet cafeterias. Catered morale events and offsite retreats. Hallway conversations and conference room whiteboarding sessions. If workplace facilities and perks help people feel more comfortable, productive, and valued, those investments stop paying off when most people work remotely.

Let’s face it: the sudden global migration from on-premises to work-from-anywhere computing has transformed the device user experience into the entire workplace experience.

Many organizations have understandably deprioritized user experience in the face of economic pressures and security threats that have strained IT bandwidth during the transition.

What does that look like? Devices that hang or crash, taking 10 or more minutes to reboot. Disruptive remote troubleshooting sessions. Important files getting lost in email – and worse: version control issues – as colleagues adopt digital collaboration tools.

When the device is the only conduit for literally all workplace experiences, there are no free snacks to balance out the inconveniences, disruptions, and frustrations adding up over the course of months.

More likely than not, your organization can relate. Analyst Josh Bersin finds the #1 employee concern is tech for remote work. We have collaborated closely with these first cohorts to expand our understanding of real-world conditions in customer environments, and to refine our service roadmap accordingly.

Now, I’m happy to share that the number-crunching ought to be much easier for organizations that are considering Microsoft Managed Desktop.

We recently commissioned Forrester to study the total economic impact of Microsoft Managed Desktop. The total economic impact approach allows us to showcase hard cost savings alongside softer benefits, such as the value of an endpoint manager’s time saved on repetitive tasks. It even touches on benefits that are harder to quantify, such as the positive impact of a great user experience on employee sentiment, or the value of averting a major security breach.

Forrester conducted primary research with four customers and details how Microsoft Managed Desktop delivered key outcomes in the following areas:

Improved user satisfaction and productivity.

Reduced the time spent sourcing, configuring, and deploying devices.

Empowered their IT teams.

Improved endpoint security by consolidating endpoint protection

Using the firsthand experience of these Microsoft Managed Desktop customers, Forrester profiled the following composite organization.

“A global, multibillion-dollar business-to-consumer organization that provides sales, customer support, and service/warranty support for its consumer products in high volume. The organization has $1.5 billion in revenue and 5,000 Windows desktops and laptops. The organization replaces a third of its endpoints to Microsoft Managed Desktop each year as part of its three-year replacement cycle.”

For such an organization, Forrester projects a net benefit of $8 million over four years, realizing positive returns on the Microsoft Managed Desktop investment as early as the first year. The study exposes all of its assumptions and calculations to help organizations understand the framework and apply it to their own situation.

Personally, I was most excited to see that the two largest areas of ROI were:

reducing spend on software tools that are redundant to Microsoft 365 features fully deployed by the service, and

reducing IT bandwidth previously required to set users up with new devices.

Most of the IT professionals I’ve met would agree that their least rewarding work is getting users set up from zero to productive on a new device.

What could be better than cutting costs by offloading your least rewarding tasks so you can focus on more strategic work that drives the company forward?

It’s especially gratifying to share this study in an era when so many organizations are seeking to optimize their systems for remote work and do more with less. We are confident that prioritising a modern and enjoyable workspace will significantly improve our colleague experience.”

Of course, if you’ve followed Microsoft Managed Desktop since the earliest announcement of our service, you already know LBG was one of our first collaborators in bringing our vision to life. LBG is a multifaceted organization that has built complex solutions to solve many different business workloads. This is a common situation for many enterprises, and a considerable challenge to move to a consistent, modern environment without impeding day-to-day operations. That mindset is understandable: device management is almost no one’s idea of a core competency.

However, we find some business leaders treat technology not as a cost center, but as a core business enabler: a strategic function that fuels growth and innovation. These organizations recognize that underinvesting in technology can compromise crucial business functions, waste their people’s time, and drive down employee sentiment – introducing risks, inefficiencies, and distractions that can cap overall company performance.

Imagine your conference call is about to begin, but your device is going to take another five minutes to boot. Or imagine your device crashes midway into a customer presentation, and it takes ten minutes to get your slides back onscreen. Experiences like that quickly frustrate your people, which could give your business a reputation for being out of date – and out of touch.

My team has been collaborating with customers over the past few years to understand and work to overcome the technical and business challenges that keep organizations from delivering secure, modern, and fantastic device experiences with Microsoft 365.

The result is Microsoft Managed Desktop: a cloud-based IT management and security monitoring service that improves productivity by delighting users and empowering IT to focus on core business goals.

One enterprise customer had an average 18-minute boot sequence, largely due to its hybrid mix of desktop security agents running redundant functionality. Microsoft Managed Desktop has replaced that experience with a new boot sequence averaging under 30 seconds. Saving 17.5 minutes per day, times 240 workdays per year, reclaims 70 productive hours for every user. For a company of 2,500 people, that’s more than 150,000 hours reclaimed per year. The financial saving or efficiency gain for this one item alone can be a huge win.

In our next post, we’ll share even more compelling data about how Microsoft Managed Desktop has helped customers fuel core business impact by modernizing device management. This post examines how a “cost center” mindset can cap an organization’s potential for productivity and innovation.

Maintaining a complex environment

Devices house a delicate ecosystem that is always evolving in tandem with innovation and security threats. That ecosystem includes the device hardware, apps, drivers, and the operating system (or platform software) that enables all those components to function together.

Any change to the operating system can interfere with the way apps and drivers interact with the new platform version as deployed on any given device model.

To mitigate such risks to user productivity, IT typically researches and tests each combination of hardware and software for compatibility with the new platform version prior to deployment. If a company’s combination of apps, drivers, hardware and operating system don’t reliably work together, IT then takes the role of system integrator for a set of components that may have never been tested together anywhere in the world.

Without access to most of the code in this unique set of componentry, IT has the unenviable task of lobbying third parties to debug and fix issues – which can take months – and if they are successful, they then test, re-integrate, and test again ad infinitum until the system works. This is highly redundant and wasteful work.

Worse, IT seldom receives fixes for everything. Instead, IT may have to release a set of software, drivers and platform componentry that “kinda” works. The end user then gets to discover the instability of the unique integration package on their own, randomly impeding productivity and steadily building frustration with IT.

We see evidence of this effect every day when we look at performance issues like system crashes. When we compare the crash rates of Microsoft Managed Desktop devices to the rest of the corporate devices that send diagnostic data to Microsoft, we see that non-Microsoft Managed Desktop corporate machines, on average, have four times the system crash rate of Microsoft Managed Desktop devices. This is an example of the benefit of an architected service like Microsoft Managed Desktop – tested and verified by Microsoft engineers.

Sweating assets

The “cost center” mentality keeps devices in production until assets are fully depreciated, or longer, which adds to the challenge of managing complexity. Software evolves faster than hardware, so a device manufactured five years ago typically can’t activate all new software or platform features.

For example, Windows Hello uses facial recognition to help eliminate high-friction password security from the user experience. This provides a dramatically more secure environment; however, older devices don’t have adequate hardware to perform facial recognition.

Imagine you have a five-year device refresh schedule in an organization of 2,500 users who are evenly spread across five user profiles. Each year, your IT team selects five device models suited to those profiles, placing an order for 100 of each model. That means you have 25 device models deployed at any given time – but, realistically, it’s 30, if a handful of six-year-old devices are still deployed for various reasons.

A shorter, three-year device refresh schedule would have 15 instead of 30 device models to test with every quality or feature update to the operating system. If your organization has 200 apps, and each app takes somewhere between one and 16 hours to test on the platform on each device model, you can see how halving the number of device models could significantly decrease IT bandwidth required to update. That’s particularly true of the older device models, which are least likely to support new features of the platform.

On the security front, risks of keeping older assets can be more dire. Every month using an unpatched system is an extra month for malicious actors to identify and exploit vulnerabilities. Imagine one of the five-year-old device models can’t take a monthly quality update because the touchpad driver for the device keeps crashing, and the small ISV that wrote the touchpad driver no longer supports the driver. If you can no longer deploy quality updates to this part of your estate, these devices are locked in a permanent state of vulnerability and must be managed differently.

Tough choices for IT

Treating technology as overhead year after year invariably pushes IT organizations to do more with less, forcing impossible decisions that merely defer, transfer, and compound the costs of staying current. Meanwhile, the resulting compromises begin to atrophy user experience – or even user productivity.

When corporate policy mandates devices stay in production far beyond their peak functional value, do you deploy limited IT bandwidth on hundreds or thousands of hours researching, testing, and deploying updates? Not if you don’t have the personnel, or the budget to outsource. The pragmatic and quite common approach is to wait a year or two for app publishers to deliver new versions that are compatible with the platform updates.

Or, what if your commonly-used in-house application doesn’t support the new platform, and updates are not on your development team’s roadmap for another 24 months? Your only option is to stop updating the platform software – at least for devices that require that application – and hope for the best.

But those decisions affect the rest of the organization in ways that may not be intuitive for a business analyst to correlate on a balance sheet.

Performance

Enterprise platform software licensing typically includes a regular pace of updates over the contract duration. Windows releases monthly quality updates that address bugs and vulnerabilities, and feature updates twice a year that add new functionality and help improve things like CPU performance and battery life.

Those updates reflect a part of your contract fees. By failing to install the updates you’ve paid for, you’re leaving money on the table – along with the significant value they can provide. If new productivity and collaboration tools accelerate your throughput, turnaround times, or client responsiveness, everybody wins.

Agility

A regular pace of updates delivers change in manageable doses. If you defer feature updates for 18 or 24 months, you’re queuing up a lot of changes to the look, feel, and functionality of the platform and the user experience. That can be disorienting enough to require costly, time-consuming change management initiatives and training to help your people adapt. The planning alone can sap bandwidth from enterprise leadership in the months prior to a major update.

Once you fall behind on updates, it’s increasingly difficult to move the entire environment forward in tandem, causing a downward spiral: the more heterogeneous the device configurations, the longer it takes to move everything forward.

Meanwhile, as devices age, device performance becomes less stable: third party vendors start to lose support for the operating system, and fixes start being bolted on to fill the cracks. The PC you end up running after a time can become a fragile concoction of compromises, increasingly vulnerable to a high-severity security breach. Complex, legacy environments can quickly paralyze an IT organization that’s perennially tasked to achieve more despite budget and headcount reductions.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft Managed Desktop is already upgrading customers from the Windows 10, version 1903 feature release to Windows 10, version 1909, which was released in November. Due to the platform innovations, architecture of the Microsoft Managed Desktop environment, and unflinching focus on keeping customers up to date, this Windows feature update takes a mere two-and-a-half minutes to install on most user devices.

Market perception

Outdated tools can make your organization look like a troglodyte to potential employees and clients who want modern productivity and collaboration in their workplace culture.

And, quite frankly, if you’re bogging your IT organization down with the menial, exponentially spiraling work of device maintenance, you’re not deploying your tech-savviest people to innovate technology solutions to your core business problems and thereby help lift revenues.

Time for a modern mindset

If your organization views technology as overhead, you are probably experiencing some of these symptoms of a complex, legacy environment. The good news is, Microsoft Managed Desktop offers an accelerated path out of the traditional device management quagmire, and into the reference implementation of a modern workplace based on the Microsoft platform.

Best of all, new data from our early adopters has shown extraordinary impact on key business enablement metrics, which we’ll share in a forthcoming post. I recently met Alicia to discuss the impact of digital transformation on Slater and Gordon’s core business and operations.

Meg Muran (MM): Alicia, I’m curious – what does “digital transformation” look like in a field as traditional as legal services?

Alicia Alinia (AA): The legal services world has never really gone through the scale of technological disruption we are now facing. Despite regulatory changes in the UK, legal services have still been really well cocooned over the years, providing the same services in the same way. But cloud-based technology has enabled us to consider our industry through a new lens – and to become far more creative about the services we provide.

Specifically, we aspire to transform legal services to make our customer the center of every part of our service. Traditional law firms have a partner-centric mindset – where they view the partners’ profiles as the biggest pull in terms of client attraction. This is part of our shift in mindset to recognize the opportunities in digital transformation. Centering our services around the customer requires massive operational shifts.

MM: How do you mean?

AA: It’s about providing services that are seamless yet responsive to the customer’s needs in that moment, even before we get to the legal system. Digital transformation allows us to be more transparent and available to our customers.

This shift recognizes the customer as the ultimate power in assessing the quality of service they receive. We’re not simply measuring ourselves by tracking our status in the Legal 500 or Chambers, as judged by our industry peers. We’re measuring how well our customers are satisfied with our quality of service, based on what’s most important to them.

In many cases, our customer is unfamiliar with the event they’re experiencing. Even buying a house for the first time can leave a person feeling vulnerable. That vulnerability requires us, as the provider of legal services, to be agile in the way we deal with each request for assistance, such as having the flexibility to meet with customers or their families conveniently where they are – in the hospital, in their homes, wherever they feel safe to talk – not simply in our offices.

MM: That certainly changes the dynamic of the attorney-client relationship!

AA: Absolutely. We have to provide a diverse workforce that brings emotional intelligence to the customer, who has come to us at their most vulnerable time. We are the point of call when they have reached a level of need that requires legal services. So, we strive to create a talented workforce where our people are great communicators who are emotionally intelligent problem-solvers in how they serve customers.

MM: How does Microsoft Managed Desktop fit into this transformation, as you’re rethinking your customer, your services, your talent profile, and your business model?

AA: This transformation requires us to become far more efficient, far more innovative, and far more reachable as a business. As a cloud service, Microsoft Managed Desktop empowers us to secure data, facilitate back-end functions, and streamline everything, so our people can focus on the unique functions that require emotional intelligence for customer engagement.

Microsoft Managed Desktop gives us a way to make sure we’ve got a much more inclusive workforce. It’s no longer an issue if somebody says, “I’m a returning mom, and I want to do three days a week from home and two days in the office.” Traditionally, that would be an issue, if your security model requires people to be at their desks and behind a firewall every day.

But now we can open opportunities to absolutely any type of workforce. We can meet customers wherever they are and collaborate in real time with colleagues in remote locations. Even worse, they don’t always secure the environment as well as intended.

We’ve applied these learnings to the Microsoft Managed Desktop service and have begun empowering customers with devices that deliver on security – without compromising the end-user experience.

Authenticating what you know vs. who you are

Take a moment to think about all your personal accounts that require passwords for online access: your subscriptions, social media, vendors, bank accounts, and even your Wi-Fi router.

That’s likely a sizable list, which is why password-based access control is not the best way to protect workplace tools and data, such as your VPN connection, in-house apps and tools, third-party expense reporting or sales data apps, and so forth.

Passwords can get stolen as they’re transmitted across the network. Simple passwords can be hacked in seconds using common hacking tools. Stronger passwords are difficult to remember. Many people reuse strong but memorable passwords for multiple accounts. So, when large consumer organizations experience data breaches that expose passwords and identities, your systems are vulnerable if an employee has reused that password for workplace logins.

The Microsoft Managed Desktop service takes a different approach. Instead of only verifying what the user knows, it also confirms who the user is, and what the user has, via several modern technologies incorporated into Microsoft 365 that Microsoft Managed Desktop is optimized to support. When it runs your PC environment, Microsoft Managed Desktop allows you to deploy these technologies consistently across user devices:

Biometrics like facial recognition and fingerprint scans, which are far more difficult to hack.

Device PINs safeguard a specific device with a specific PIN, which is authenticated locally using the Trusted Platform Model, and is therefore harder to steal. Wrong guesses lock the device until the user authenticates another way, and knowing the PIN is useless without the specific device.

Phone-factor authentication adds another layer of protection by asking users to confirm an access request via a quick interaction with their smartphone authentication app.

Not all devices include all the features and functionality required to support these modern security approaches. Environments that include some legacy devices and outdated software will not be able to deploy modern security across the entire organization, which leaves those devices vulnerable. That’s like going on vacation with all your doors locked but leaving your windows wide open.

As part of the Microsoft Managed Desktop service, our team curates a catalog of devices that can fully support the security features of our offering, enabling Microsoft Managed Desktop customers to standardize on more modern authentication techniques.

Hybrid management complexity

Backup and restoration. Data management. Data loss prevention. Remote support. VPN. Antivirus software. To provide these and other crucial functions, it used to be necessary to pay for and deploy a variety of solutions on top of the operating system – because no single vendor covered all the necessary functions.

Each specialized app caters to a specific security function in the environment and triggers a specific response. For example, an antivirus app monitors for files with specific virus signatures and moves infected files to quarantine.

Each app therefore requires its own always-running agent that consumes memory, processing power, battery life, and other system resources. What’s more, security agents often perform redundant tasks, consuming two or three times the resources the function requires. In a sense, you’re permanently giving away part of your company’s hardware capacity – and budget – just to run all these agents.

Deploying many agents can degrade the user experience so severely that we’ve seen many large organizations budget several hundred dollars per device on memory upgrades, just to deliver minimally acceptable performance and usability.

Not only does a hybrid approach to security suites deteriorate the user experience, but the IT management burden is substantial.

Siloed functions. Agents from different software vendors don't share data with one another. Each has its own specific management console, which increases the manual effort required to manage across all functions. Manual efforts are costly and prone to human error in configuration or updates - which is precisely the sort of thing hackers look to exploit.

Delayed updates. Integrating, testing, and deploying updates across an entire fleet of devices can be extremely time-consuming for IT admins - and often prompts multiple system restarts that disrupt user productivity. Many organizations deploy updates when the user is on site or connected to the corporate network via VPN. Any delays between update availability and deployment give hackers extra time to discover and exploit known vulnerabilities that the deferred updates are designed to resolve.

Compatibility issues. Agents from different publishers can experience compatibility issues that disable functions of other apps or the operating system. They can even block system updates, leaving the device exposed until the publisher resolves the compatibility issue.

Expertise. It takes specialized knowledge - if not expertise - to manage each different publisher's agent effectively. Specialized security experience increases the talent cost, and ongoing training to stay current with major app updates can further increase management overhead.

A modern alternative is to choose a tightly integrated suite of tools instead of a complex, hybrid mix. The Microsoft Managed Desktop service uses the built-in security capabilities of Windows and Microsoft 365 along with our managed monitoring services to provide value and savings to our customers for a more streamlined experience. With Microsoft Managed Desktop, any Internet connection enables an update to user policies, a check for device compliance, and deployment of any required updates.

By simplifying the environment, we transform the challenge of managing outdated devices into an intelligent, data-driven, and highly automated service that makes updating safe. This is part of our responsibility in Microsoft Managed Desktop.

"Castle first" or "cloud first"?

If you typically work on site, you may access data seamlessly inside your organization’s firewall – which protects your systems like a moat around a castle. But what happens when you travel, or when you need to work on a report from home?

Maybe you connect to your corporate systems via a password-protected VPN, which secures the Internet connection and encrypts the data in transit. Or maybe you try to avoid using the VPN because it’s unstable, or because it makes all your applications run slower due to additional routing and high latency networks. Or maybe your company uses software to disable certain ports once your device leaves the corporate environment potentially hindering functionality and productivity.

In the face of such limitations, have your people ever:

Saved necessary files to a thumb drive or to their laptops before they left the office?

Emailed themselves a working draft via an unsecured personal account?

Created version control issues because teammates edited the centrally stored file while a remote user was working on a local copy?

Whenever security measures add friction to the user experience, you can count on users to develop creative workarounds – and that can undermine productivity, collaboration, and security, while presenting new operational risk to an organization.

Moving your data to an appropriate cloud storage provider enables a “cloud first” approach to security. Once you supply your PIN or biometric login, your device uses the Internet to authenticate your corporate credentials securely via cloud directory and verify your current access privileges, without further password prompts.

Is a user signing in from an anonymous IP address, an unfamiliar device, or a device that's infected with malware? Is a user attempting to log in from Brussels ten minutes after connecting from Vancouver?

Centralizing control of every user's permissions anytime, anywhere, empowers cloud-based security to monitor the device for suspicious access conditions. That’s why our team has designed Microsoft Managed Desktop, leveraging our cloud directory, management, and cloud storage to accelerate our customers’ transformation to this new “normal.” But first, organizations must recognize that legacy security tactics are holding them back.

Is security your core business?

Despite the tolls on user experience and security, many organizations continue to use outdated security tactics. Why?

Many organizations treat IT as a maintenance function, not a key component of business innovation and collaboration driving core business priorities, so IT leadership lacks resources to research, test, transform and deploy new solutions. Some organizations outsource the work, and transformation is difficult to drive from outside in. And some organizations just find it easier to rubber-stamp last year’s budget than to advocate a major change. This results in an antiquated computing environment and user experience which may also be less secure than expected.

When security is not your core business, other priorities get in the way. But you owe it to your company’s employees, customers, and shareholders to work on a modernization strategy, because your data might be more vulnerable than you realize.

Microsoft invests more than one billion dollars each year in security R&D and operational functions that many organizations don’t even know they should be pursuing, including security monitoring, threat detection, threat intelligence, penetration testing, data loss prevention, automation, and machine learning. We continue to evolve our security platform and services because doing so is core to our business.

If you don’t spend a billion dollars per year on security – let’s face it, few companies could – I have good news for you. By extending our core business investments to protect your organization, the Microsoft Managed Desktop service enables these security investments for you and thereby empowers you to invest more in your core business.

If you’re interested in learning more, please subscribe to the Microsoft Managed Desktop blog. We’ll also share more on how we’ve accelerated that path by delivering more holistic security as part of the service than many organizations or vendors could afford to achieve on their own.

Learn more about Bill Karagounis
Thu, 06 May 2021 19:20:56 GMT Bill Karagounis 2021-05-06T19:20:56Z Workplace Computing: it’s Time for a New “Normal”

If you’re old enough to recall being tethered to large desktop machines and bulky monitors, you might expect a certain amount of pain from your work-issued device. Maybe you power-on before you get your morning coffee because you know it’ll take 10 minutes to boot up. Maybe your five-year-old laptop is as heavy as a brick and as hot as a furnace. Maybe you lug your power adapter everywhere because your battery will certainly die within a couple of hours.

It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time to shift paradigms and imagine if logging into your work PC was as easy as powering up a smartphone. Can you imagine a work laptop that boots in 30 seconds or less? A device that works as expected without any system crashes? A battery charge that lasts a full business day, and then some?

I can imagine. In my last role in Windows 10 engineering, I was personally accountable for operating system performance, reliability, battery life, app/driver compatibility, and responsiveness. I know what modern workplace devices are capable of.

What makes a great user experience?

Since then, my team has been building a new service, Microsoft Managed Desktop, intended to help large and small organizations deliver a frictionless device experience while enhancing – not compromising – device security.

We are inspired by consumer experience expectations, in which everything just works, and we want to bring that simplicity and reliability to the workplace. Our productivity apps and secure data already enable people to get work done from anywhere, but we want to make sure our customers are equipping their talent with the frictionless device experiences they need to focus all their efforts toward creating a competitive edge.

So we started with an ambitious vision of a great user experience.

For example, we believe devices should be ready to use in 30 seconds or less, even if you’re just powering up for the day. We believe your device should resume from sleep in about two seconds, and it should support biometrics to make authentications and logins fast and easy, while enhancing security.

We believe your battery should last throughout your workday.

We believe your teams should have a central hub where they can collaborate, chat, meet, share files, and work with business apps in a shared workspace. Your data should save automatically to the cloud.

We believe your salespeople deserve automated design to help to make their PowerPoint presentations look beautiful.

We believe you shouldn't have to worry about the latest malware threat in the news. If a user leaves their backpack on the bus, we believe they should be able to receive a new device that they can boot wherever they are, log in, and get their personal configuration, policies, apps, and documents back in minutes. And we believe that lost device should be able to be remotely wiped.

We believe your people should inspire envy at meetings and professional conferences when they open their modern, touchscreen, lightweight, highly responsive devices – and everything just works. And we believe those high-performing, feature-rich devices can actually be more affordable to source and maintain.

I’m proud to say our vision has become the new normal for our Microsoft Managed Desktop customers. But we’ve found that, for a number of organizations, implementing this vision may require some stakeholders to shed long-held assumptions in order to embrace a new user-centric reality.

What’s more important than user experience?

Pragmatic senior leaders may accept the idea that security and cost-efficiency inherently compromise user experience, productivity, collaboration, and innovation. But the newest generations of talent don’t. I don’t. And if your competitors don’t, you’re at a disadvantage.

Many organizations are doubling down on legacy policies, tasks, equipment, and priorities that incrementally address the symptoms (though never the root cause) of poor user experience.

But it doesn’t make sense to use outdated tools and methods to protect and maintain your environment when the threats evolve faster than you can secure your devices.

It doesn’t make sense to keep your IT talent busy maintaining and restoring devices to a functional state instead of innovating technology solutions to core business problems.

And it doesn’t make sense to squeeze a few extra years out of legacy technology instead of investing in modern tools that attract, retain, and truly empower top talent to be productive and collaborative.

In collaboration with customers and partners, we’ve learned about the systemic, technical, and mindset issues that block large and small organizations alike from empowering talent with modern productivity tools and devices.

And we’ve seen what happens when those organizations stop having to commit so much time and many resources into desktop management, instead equipping information workers and IT talent with the frictionless productivity-enhancing tools and environment to achieve core business goals.

Over the coming weeks, my team and I will be using this space to unpack the obstacles that block organizations from delivering a great user experience—and then we’ll start sharing how we’re working alongside customers and partners to make delighting end users the new “normal.” So be sure to subscribe, explore and share.

Learn more about Bill Karagounis
Thu, 06 May 2021 19:20:55 GMT Bill Karagounis 2021-05-06T19:20:55Z
